Proper aftercare is essential for healing and maintaining the quality of your tattoo. Follow these guidelines for best results.
Keep the initial bandage/wrap on for 2-4 hours after your tattoo. For larger pieces, leave it on overnight. This protects the tattoo from bacteria and allows the plasma to help with initial healing.
After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free, antibacterial soap. Use your clean fingers to gently clean the area—never a washcloth or sponge. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
Once dry, apply a THIN layer of unscented moisturizer or specialized tattoo ointment (like Aquaphor or Hustle Butter). Use just enough to make the skin look slightly damp—more is not better!
Wash and moisturize your tattoo 2-3 times per day for the first 2 weeks. Consistent care during this period is crucial for proper healing.
Week 1
Your tattoo will be red, swollen, and may ooze plasma. It may look shiny or have a "plastic" appearance. The tattoo will start to peel and itch—this is normal! Keep moisturizing and don't scratch.
Week 2
Heavy peeling is normal—your tattoo will look like it's peeling off in sheets. This is the top layer of skin regenerating. Don't help it along! Reduce moisturizing to 1-2 times daily.
Weeks 3-4
The tattoo will look healed on the surface but will still feel dry or tight. Continue moisturizing. You can resume normal activities but still avoid submerging the tattoo.
Weeks 4-6
Your tattoo is now fully healed! The colors may look slightly muted as the outer layer settles. For long-term care, keep the tattoo moisturized and always use sunscreen to prevent fading.
